Lawndale, California
Lawndale was incorporated as a city within Los Angeles County in 1959, however, its history dates back to 1822. The area was originally known as Rancho Sausal-Redondo and encompassed the areas which are now known as Lawndale, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. The fertile land was initially used an unfenced grazing pasture for cattle. The land was owned by Antonio Ignacio Avila from 1822 to 1846 and consisted of 22,000 acres. Ten years after Avila’s death, is heirs sold the land to a Scottish Nobleman, Robert Burnett in 1868.
Burnett raise sheep instead of cattle and made extensive developments in orchards and barley due the limited water for irrigation. Now named Centinela Ranch, Burnet returned to Scotland and rented the land to Daniel and Catherine Freeman who continued to raise sheep and grow barley. After a 2-year drought and half of the sheep died, the focus was on growing barley. The freeman family was able to make the Ranch profitable despite the limited rainfall.
In 1890, a seaport opened in Redondo and the railroad service began development between Port Redondo and Los Angeles. Henry Huntington was able to acquire and transport inexpensive water to the area to support the growing population. Charles B. Hopper, a real estate developer, founded the city of Lawndale in March 1905.
Farms were small and agriculture continued to dominate the area along with crops, sheep and poultry. The major influx of people into Lawndale did not occur until a decade after the ending of World War II. After the dismantling of the Pacific Electric railroad, Lawndale changed from being a rural community to one with daily automobile traffic running throughout the city.
Today, Lawndale is home to over 32,700 people with the median age of 32 years old and an average family size of 3.84 people. The weather is warm yearlong with moderate rain in the winter. Because of its close proximity to the beach, Lawndale experiences the same marine layer and weather as nearby Manhattan Beach.
